"At most, only one in two people survives septic shock."

Mr. Gründling, as a child I thought I learned how to recognize sepsis: by the red streak that forms under the skin after an injury and travels from the wound towards the chest. If it reaches the heart, it's fatal, I was told. Is that actually true? I've seen many people with sepsis, but I never saw a red streak. It indicates inflammation of the lymphatic system as a result of an infection, but not necessarily sepsis. And sepsis usually doesn't even develop from a wound.
